Our History

Tradition of Service Since 1935

Gent Funeral Home was founded in 1935 by Ralph A. Gent, who opened the funeral home in Alton with a commitment to serving families with compassion, professionalism, and integrity.

In 1970, leadership of the funeral home transitioned to Les Bowles, who continued building on the strong foundation established by Ralph Gent. Over the years, Gent Funeral Home earned the trust of families throughout the Alton area by providing thoughtful guidance and respectful care during times of loss.

In 1987, Ralph Bowles joined the funeral home after completing his education and mortuary training. With decades of experience in funeral service, he continued the tradition of compassionate care while helping the funeral home adapt to the evolving needs of the community.

Throughout its history, Gent Funeral Home has remained committed to celebrating life and helping families reflect on the memories and relationships that make every life unique.

In 2005, the funeral home added an on-site crematory, providing families with continuity of care and the reassurance that the cremation process is handled under the supervision of our professional staff.

In 2020, Gent Funeral Home completed a significant 2,300-square-foot expansion and renovation, improving accessibility and adding new gathering spaces, accessible restrooms, a lounge, and additional office areas to better serve families in the community.

Today, Gent Funeral Home continues its long-standing tradition of serving families throughout the Riverbend region with compassion, professionalism, and a deep commitment to the community.
