Rev. Robert Lee Mathes Sr., age 86 died at 3:05 PM on Thursday, October 4, 2018 at John Cochran VA Hospital in St. Louis. Born in East St. Louis on October 5, 1931 he was the son of the late Dalton Shelby and Emily Etta (Hudson) Mathes. Robert was a US Navy Korean War veteran and a member of Abundant Life Community Church in Alton. He began his professional life as a music and choral teacher in various school systems, pastored in Nashville, IL and Granite City, IL and was currently the Sr. Adult Pastor at Abundant Life Community Church in Alton. He married the former Katherine Alice (Talbott) on September 18, 1955 and she preceded him in death on January 19, 2014. Surviving are three children; Bridget Renee Jones of Euless, TX, Robert Lee Mathes Jr. (Marsha Kay) of Newbern, TN and Carla IvEtta Chappee (Eric Evens) of Alton, Grandchildren; Mitchel Scott Mathes ( Sarah Megan), Jessica Renee White (Steven Ray), Parrish Channing Dunbar, Callie Jane Chappee, Joselyn Noemi LeeEtta Chappee and two great grandchildren; Alyssa Paige and Cash Makakoa. He was preceded in death by nine siblings. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Abundant Life Community Church in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, October 10, 2018 with Pastor Roy Rhodes officiating. Burial will be with full military honors at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis. Memorials may be given to the church.
