Obituary

Robert Lee “Bob” Handling, 84, of Brighton, Illinois, passed away on October 30, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, love, and laughter.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Bob carried with him a deep sense of pride in serving his country. He valued the friendships and camaraderie of his fellow veterans and especially enjoyed spending time at the VFW, sharing stories, laughter, and good company.

In 1966, Bob married his high school sweetheart, Joyce St. Cin. Together, they shared 60 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family, and countless memories.

A hardworking and dedicated man, Bob spent 32 years as a crane operator at Laclede Steel. He took pride in his work and believed in the value of a hard day’s labor.

Some of Bob’s happiest days were spent along the river. Whether cruising on his pontoon boat, camping, catfishing, or simply enjoying the beauty of the outdoors, the river always held a special place in his heart. He taught his children, Connie and Rob, one lesson they would never forget: always respect the river. It was a lesson that went beyond the water itself, one of respect, appreciation, and understanding the power of nature.

Bob was a man who appreciated life’s simple pleasures. A good day on the river, a fishing pole in his hand, time spent with family and friends, or a cold beer on his patio were often all he needed to be happy. He didn’t need anything fancy, just good company, a familiar place, and a reason to sit back and enjoy the moment.

Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Joyce; his children, Connie (Kenny) Beyer and Rob (Carrie) Handling II; his grandchildren, Erin (Nathan) Wegener, Eric (Sydney) Beyer, and Lexie Handling; his bonus grandchildren, Cheyenne, Easton, and Ridge; and his great-grandchildren, Kayden, Quinnly, Hailey, and Savannah.

Bob leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, treasured memories, and lessons that will continue through generations. His family will forever remember the stories he told, the time spent together, and the simple moments that meant so much.

Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in every trip down the river, every fishing line cast, every family gathering, and every cold beer enjoyed on the patio.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, November 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Brighton Cemetery, located on South Cross Street in Brighton, Illinois.

Fair winds and following seas, Bob. Until we meet again.

Memorial may be given in honor of Bob to Alton VFW Post 1308.

The family is being served by Gent Funeral Home & Cremation Services at 2409 State Street Alton, IL 62002.
