Robert L. Baker, 87, died at 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at his residence under the loving care of his grandson, Steven. He was born September 8, 1928 in Lincoln, IL the son of the late William and Io (Smith) Baker. On July 1, 1966 he married Bessie E. (Beer) and she preceded him in death on February 12, 2014. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of North Alton Southern Baptist Church. He was an avid bowler and square dancer. Surviving are his step- children; Jerry Ford, Bette James, Richard Evans and Kathy Schmoeller, several grandchildren and great grandchildren , three brothers; Reverend Ramon Baker, William Daniel Baker and Richard Baker, two sisters; Eugena Leisch and Marilu Back. He was preceded in death by one step daughter; Lisa Pruitt, and two step grandsons; Patrick Schmoeller and Brian Pfaff and two brothers; James and Stanley Baker. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton with Reverend Sonny Renken to officiate. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville with full military honors. Memorials may be made to North Alton Southern Baptist Church.
