Richard James Phillips Jr., 47, died at 10:15 p.m. Friday, December 12, 2014 at his home in Alton. Born August 10, 1967 in Alton, he was the son of Richard J. and Ann Marie (Taul) Phillips Sr. of Alton. He worked as a mechanic for Helmkamp Auto Service and was a member of SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. He loved racing of all kinds and used to race stock cars at the Godfrey Speedway. Along with his parents he is survived by a son, Austin Phillips of Alton, a sister, Melissa Goble (Brant) of Godfrey and nieces and nephews; Jacob, Samuel, Margaret and Benjamin. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at SS Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Alton. Monsignor Kenneth Steffen will officiate. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Alton. Memorials may be made to the Phillips family.
