Helen Smith, 79, died at 8:07 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2015 at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City. Born June 17, 1935 in Alton, she was the daughter of George and Gladys (Penning) Stade. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Landmark Baptist Church in Collinsville where she was a very active member. She was a CNA at the Pinckneyville Hospital, the Pinckneyville Nursing Home, and the Nashville Nursing Home retiring in 1993. On August 3, 1951 she married John Franklin Smith. He preceded her in death on March 20, 2003. Surviving are six children, Lisa J. Zimmer-Smith and her fiancé Greg Rock of Pinckneyville, Steven Lee Smith (Gayla) of Pinckneyville, Johnny Smith of Bethalto, Tim Smith of DuBois, IL, Joel Smith of Walsh, IL, and Bruce Smith (Zoe) of Bethalto, 23 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild on the way. Also surviving is a sister Janette Orban of Godfrey. Along with her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a son, Matthew Smith, a sister, Deloris Cushing, and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Orban. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, 2015 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. Burial will be at Melville Cemetery in Godfrey.
