Carol Lee (Hanneken) McGee, 79, our beloved mom and grandma, went to meet her Heavenly Father at 5:07 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2019 at Jerseyville Nursing & Rehab, after a long and arduous battle with cancer. She was born on September 10, 1939 in Golden Eagle, Illinois, to Henry and Frances (Bimslager) Hanneken. She graduated with the Brussels High School Class of 1958. She married Jerome Gerald McGee on September 10, 1960 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Brussels. Jerome preceded her in death on December 20, 2017. Jerome and Carol spent their early years of marriage in El Paso, Texas where Jerome served in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Bliss. After service, they moved to Godfrey where they remained for 54 years and were members of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Carol retired in 1978 after 16 years of employment at St. Anthony's Hospital as an EKG technician. Our mom was hardworking and a dedicated mom and grandma who enjoyed "making sure everyone was happy and taken care of." She enjoyed gardening and entertaining. She hosted many dinners and late night pinochle games with family and friends. Some of her greatest joys included helping her family and babysitting her grandchildren. She was also able to make a lifelong dream come true of traveling to Lourdes, France. Carol is survived by three children; Chris McGee and Stephanie of Godfrey, Penny (Tim) Eberlin of Golden Eagle, and Amy (Patrick) Bohn of Godfrey; nine grandchildren, Carrie (Terry) Jones, Kristy (Mark) Merrill, Sasha McGee, Kaleb McGee, Zach (Jamie) Eberlin, Cody Eberlin, Ethan Eberlin, Haley Bohn, and Hadley Bohn; sic great-grandchildren, one dear sister, Jean Narup of Alton, a sister-in-law, Kitty Rutledge, brother-in-law, Lester McGee, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Jerome (Mary Lou) Hanneken, Ronald (Toi) Hanneken and her sister, Ruth (Ben) Stumpf, sisters-in-law, Sr. Mary Rose Catherine and Bertha (Melvin) Johnes, and brothers-in-law, Ray Narup, Bernie McGee, and Fritz McGee. Carole donated her body to Washington University School of Medicine for medical education. In celebration of her life, a memorial Mass will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2019 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. Father Steven Janoski and Deacon Bill Kessler will be celebrants.
