Born November 22, 1942 in East Alton, he was the son of Melvin W. and Gladys Maxine (Gentry) Roach. Sonny was truly a Masterpiece Created by God. He had a contagious smile that would melt your heart. A Soul of Kindness and Love. He enjoyed everything in life. He loved to listen to Willy’s Roadhouse on his radio. He worked on putting puzzles together and go fishing when someone would as him to go along. Sonny always enjoyed going to the Turkey Banquet with a special friend. He would ride along in the truck with is brother-in-law to go coyote hunting. He has a twin sister “Sis” that he loved to sneak up on and scare. His sister Barb who would take him to the VFW to dance and enjoy the music and his “guardian angel” Patti whom he lived with and was his awesome care giver. There wasn’t anything we wouldn’t do for him. Our guiding light and our Sonny Sun Shine. Once he met you he wouldn’t forget you. He touched so very many hearts and lives and we are forever grateful to everyone who loved him and prayed for him. A special thank you to the doctors and nurses who cared for him at Alton Memorial Hospital. He is survived by three sisters, Barbara Edelen of Godfrey, Phyllis Sloan of O’Fallon, MO, and Patti Rose (Roger) of Brussels, special nephews; Mike Edelen, Kevin (LeAnn) Edelen, Tim (Denise) Rose, special nieces; Kelly (Mike) Lawrence, Kimberly (Ron) Crum, Christy Sloan, Lisa (Mark) Heil, and Kathy (Steve) Phillips, many great and great-great nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a great niece, Jordan Elizabeth Edelen, great nephew, Bryan Edward Reynolds, and a great-great niece, April Tegeler. Grave side services will be private at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Pastor Rick Dement will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to Muscular Dystrophy, the Illinois Center of Autism in Belleville or the Sons of the Legionnaires in Brussels, IL. God grant me serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference. A celebration of Sonny’s life will be held after this horrible COVID-19 is over. We pray for everyone to be safe. Gent Funeral Home in Alton is in charge of arrangements.
